Career Talk: NHS & Psychiatry
This week, Year 12 students attended a careers talk on medicine and psychiatry delivered by medical students from King's College London. They participated in Session 1: Understanding Mental Health and Exploring Careers in Mental Health, which focused on exploring careers in the NHS and psychiatry.
The programme, Psych for 6th, is designed to provide aspiring medics with a deeper understanding of psychiatry as a career, raise awareness about mental health issues, and offer guidance on medical school applications. This initiative includes two one-hour sessions, delivered by KCL medical students, offering students a glimpse into what it’s like to study psychiatry in medical school. The sessions also include case scenario discussions and valuable tips and advice for navigating the medical application process.
In the first session, students had the opportunity to ask questions about psychosis, the required A-level subjects for this career path, job salaries, and the daily life of a doctor. Next week, students will take part in Session 2: A Deep Dive into a Specific Medical Condition, which will be followed by an opportunity to practice taking a medical history with their peers.
