Black History Month events
This week students at Harris Clapham Sixth Form were celebrating Black History Month. The amazing Anti-Racism team put together an incredible set of workshops. Both the workshops drew a big crowd of staff and students, showing really how supportive a community we have!
On Tuesday, Noelyne and Faridat ran an amazing session on African food, where they taught students and staff about cooking with Jollof rice and plantain. They even shared a delicious recipe - which Mr Habing was eager to get down. Noelyne cooked a special dish of plantain, jollof and beef for the day, which looked incredible.
On Wednesday, Sarah led a session on braiding African hair. It was a great learning experience, where she talked through the different types of braids, and their origins. Sarah was clearly amazingly passionate and talked articulately about beauty standards in a post-colonial world, all whilst braiding the hair of her model, Nubia.
Our final celebration of the half term is on Friday, where Harris Clapham Sixth Form opens its first talent show. The afternoon will see students celebrating African and Caribbean culture - which includes a dance, a rap, some poetry, and an acting skit. We’re really looking forward to seeing all of the acts shine.
This term is all about courage. A massive part of that is having the courage to be yourself, and Faridat, Noelyne, Sarah and Nubia all showed massive courage in championing our dive into Black History month this year. We are incredibly proud of them!
